DIY Networks - Windows XP Dial-Up Configuration

Configuring your dial-up Connection in Windows XP

Create a New Connection Configuring a dial-up connection Windows XP is really easy and can be done through Network Connections in Control Panel. Make your way to Network Connections as described in the tutorial Manage Your Windows XP Network Connections. Click on Create a new connection located under network tasks on the left hand side.
Welcome to the New Connection Wizard. A new screen will pop up that says Welcome to the New Connection Wizard. Click Next on this screen.
Network Connection Type. The next screen will ask you what you would like to do and there is a number of choices, Connect to the Internet, Connect to the network at my workplace, set up a home or small office network or set up an advanced connection. Click on Connect to the Internet, this will place a small dot in the circle to the left of this option and click next.
How do You Connect to the Internet. You will then be asked how you want to connect to the internet. In our instance we want to set up our connection manually, which simply means we are going to type the connections details in ourself. Select set up my connection manually and click next.
Type the Name of your ISP. Type a name for your internet connection into the box on the next screen. Although the screen actually prompts you to type the name of your ISP into the box what your typing in is a friendly name for the connection and it can be absolutely anything and still work. Once you've typed in what you prefer click next.
Type the Phone Number to connect to your ISP. You will then be prompted to type in your ISP's phone number. This is the phone number for your Internet Service Providers modems, NOT your phone number, NOT your ISP's support number nor a phone number you just made up. If you dont know your ISP's dial-up number give them a call and ask them what it is. Once you have typed it in click next.
Internet Account Information. The next screen will ask you for your internet account information and it is here that you should type in the username and password you use to connect to your ISP. The username is often also your email address and should be typed in exactly as specified by your provider. Type your password into the password field and once again in the confirm password field. There are also two boxes that you will most likely prefer to have ticked, use this account name and password when anyone connects to the internet from this computer will allow all users on the computer to use this internet connection. Make this the default internet connection will force the computer to dial up if any internet programs are opened up such as outlook express or internet explorer and it is a wise choice to tick this box. Click next when you have completed this screen.
Completing the New Connection Wizard. The final screen when setting up a dial-up connection has only one one option on it, add a shortcut to the connection to my desktop. This just places a handy little shortcut onto your desktop that you can double click to connect to the internet and I do recommend that it is ticked although you may never use it. Click the finish button on the bottom of the screen and the computer will create the dial-up connection using the settings you have provided. Happy surfing.
